Composting and worms a hit at Warkworth A & P show

A new series of Create your Own Eden composting and worm farming workshops were launched with an interactive display at the Warkworth A & P show, which generated a high level of public interest.

Permaculture experts from Rainbow Valley Farm and Rodney District Council’s Environmental Education Officer were on hand to answer a range of questions from showground visitors keen to put their food and other organic waste to good use in their gardens.

“People were especially keen to find out more about a new system of composting called Bokashi,” says Sarah Stead, Environmental Education Officer.

“Bokashi bins are an excellent way of recycling food waste that can’t go into a worm farm like bread, paste, meat and fish. The compact bin is air tight and doesn’t smell so is ideal for small spaces and kitchen cupboards.”

Ms Stead says the fermented waste makes fantastic fertiliser and can even be used to unblock drains and septic tank systems.

Mieke van Staveren, who visited the display, was excited to have won a Bokashi starter kit in the stall’s prize draw.

I never win anything, so I am really thrilled. I have also never been to an A and P show and had I had a lovely time seeing all the animals close up and hope to come again some time.”

A number of children also stopped at the display to learn more about worm ecology.

The Create Your Own Eden stall will be set up at the Helensville and Kumeu A and P shows and visitors will be able to sign up for longer workshops aimed at those new to composting.  The dates and times for the workshops are:
