Rodney District Council is moving to protect the public from dangerous driving on beaches and other public places.
In September, the Council adopted changes to its General Bylaw which will prevent people from driving or parking vehicles in public places in a way that creates a danger to people or property. Under the revised bylaw parking in public places which are not designated for parking or using vehicles on terrain which is not a proper track or road is also not permitted.
These changes are now in force and people who breach the bylaw could face prosecution or have their vehicle seized. "Signage is in place on beaches and other public places, such as reserves, to let people know where they can drive and park," says Wayne Knightbridge, the Council’s Animal Control and Bylaws Manager.
The changes to the bylaw were made as a result of issues at the Goodhall reserve in Snells Beach. Problems were reported in this area with some individuals riding motorbikes around the reserve in a dangerous way, making other users feel unsafe. In addition to this, motorbikes have damaged the turf on the Goodall reserve, leaving ratepayers to pay for repair costs.
