Rodney District Council is warning that people who breach bylaws by driving in public reserves where they are not allowed could have their vehicles or motorbikes confiscated.
In September 2008, in response to community concern, the Council adopted changes to its General Bylaw which prevent people from driving or parking vehicles in public places in a way that creates a danger to people or property. Under the bylaw parking or driving in public places which are not designated for these activities is also not permitted.
Particular problems have been reported with motorbikes being driven dangerously at Goodall reserve in Snells Beach, where they are not permitted.
Rodney District Council is warning that people who ignore signs and flout bylaw rules could face prosecution or have their vehicles seized.
“The changes to the bylaw were introduced by the Council because local residents wanted to feel safe when using reserves,” says Rodney Northern Ward Councillor June Turner.

Sergeant Bede Haughey and Councillor June Turner at Goodall Reserve, Snells Beach, where problems with dangerous driving have been reported.
“The Council believes that people are entitled to use reserves without having their safety threatened by other people driving aggressively, whether on motorbikes or cars.”
Councillor Turner says that offenders face serious consequences such as prosecution or the seizure of their motorbike or car.
Members of the public are encouraged to report breaches of Council bylaws to Rodney District Council, so that the complaint can be investigated. Unsafe driving on public roads should be reported to the Police.
Rodney Police are supporting the Council’s stance on enforcing the bylaw.
“We will be working with Rodney District Council and assisting them to deal with breaches of the bylaw and the impoundment of vehicles when required,” says Rodney Police Sergeant Bede Haughey.
Both the Police and Council are united in their message that actions which endanger the public will not be tolerated, and that those responsible for such behaviour face serious consequences.
