District Plan Change - Kumeu

Rodney District Council has publicly notified a change to its District Plan which would allow a new cemetery to be established in Kumeu.

The existing cemetery in Farrand Rd is owned by the Anglican Church.  Additional cemetery land is required to meet future demand in the western part of the district.

The Council’s initial preference was to purchase additional land to extend the existing cemetery.  However that option was not possible to achieve at the time and the Council purchased a new site in Old Railway Road for future cemetery purposes.

The proposed site for the new cemetery is located on Old Railway Road, Kumeu a short distance from the Kumeu - Huapai and Riverhead townships, and comprises 2.6 hectares of land in a rural setting.  It is situated on a straight stretch of road that can be easily accessed from the Old North Road, the Riverhead Coatesville Highway and State Highway 16.

The proposed changes to the District Plan would allow for the development of a cemetery as a controlled activity which would mean that the Council would need to obtain a resource consent before the site could be developed.

Submissions can be made on the proposed Plan Change until 6 October.  More information about the proposal can be found online here.
