Heritage Applications Open

Rodney District Council is now seeking applications for a contestable heritage assistance fund which is aimed at preserving Rodney’s heritage.

A total of $50,000 is available from the Heritage Item Assistance Fund. Applications are open until 30 October.

Funding is available to conserve, restore and protect valuable heritage items.   Examples of the type of projects that may be eligible for funding include the restoration or repair work on heritage buildings or the preparation of research or condition assessment reports for historic buildings.  The fund is primarily targeted at items which are protected in the Rodney District Plan.

Funding applications are assessed based on:

  • the urgency of the work,
  • public access to, and visibility of, the project,
  • the level of enhancements required, and
  • heritage status.

Since the fund was established in 2005, 59 listed heritage buildings have received grants including St Andrew’s Church in Matakana, Helensville’s Union Bank, the Puhoi Hotel, Henley House in Kaukapakapa and the Mahurangi West Hall.

Earlier this year a heritage grant was made to Wilson House, just out of Warkworth.   The property was built over 100 years ago and is home to a collection of European Tapestries and Art Prints.   The grant allowed for some building restoration work to be completed to repair the cracks and repaint the house.

Application forms are available from Council service centres and can be downloaded from the Council’s website here.
