The new Northern Animal Shelter in Silverdale was officially opened by Rodney Mayor Penny Webster and North Shore Mayor Andrew Williams at a recent ceremony. Both Mayors joined with representatives from Ngati Whatua, Council staff, contractors and other invited guests to celebrate the opening of the new facility at a dawn ceremony.
The complex is similar to the award winning combined Manukau City and Papakura District Animal Shelter at Wiri in South Auckland. It was built by Watts and Hughes Construction and designed by HBO and EMTB architects.
The shelter will house up to 40 dogs with room for expansion if this becomes necessary in the future. The new facility will be jointly owned and operated by North Shore City and Rodney District Council’s in partnership, and will provide quality accommodation and a high standard of care for the animals it houses.
Speaking at the ceremony both Mayors praised the project as a successful example of what can be achieved by Council’s working together to create efficiencies for ratepayers by sharing costs and expertise.
The new facility is conveniently located for both Rodney and North Shore residents. North Shore dogs were previously impounded in Waitakere, so the new facility will be closer for residents.
The shelter provides a one stop shop service which enables owners to pay impoundment fees and recover their dogs without having to go to a council office.
From now on, North Shore residents enquiring about a missing dog should look on the North Shore City Council website, and contact the council 24-hour Actionline on 09 486 8600. Rodney residents should continue to contact the Council's call centre on 0800 426 5169.
The animal shelter is open on weekdays from 12 - 4pm and weekends from 10 am - 12 noon.
There are about 14, 500 registered dogs in North Shore City and a further 14,500 registered dogs in Rodney District.
