With the days getting shorter and a winter chill setting in, parents will be looking for ways to keep young family members occupied.
Rodney libraries are once again running a special reading challenge during May which will both entertain your children and improve their reading skills.
Rodney Mayor Penny Webster is leading ‘Mayor Penny's Reading Challenge’ which encourages children to ‘read for half an hour a day during the month of May.’
In previous years, schools have supported the challenge, and reading during school hours can be counted as part of the competition.
As part of the challenge Mayor Webster and Deputy Mayor John Kirikiri will be visiting a number of schools in Rodney District to promote the challenge, the benefits of reading and to share stories with school pupils.
Mayor Webster is a strong supporter of the challenge, and is encouraging young people to, “Keep reading and the world will be yours."
It’s simple to take part in the challenge. Entry is open to children in Years 1 – 8. Children just need to read for half and hour a day during May and have their reading verified by a parent, caregiver or teacher.
Children who visit one of the seven Rodney Libraries and take books out during May also get an extra entry into the prize draw.
Entry forms are available from Rodney libraries and have also been distributed to schools throughout the District. All children who complete the challenge will receive a certificate and will go into a prize draw to win a bike or other consolation prizes.
