People are being reminded to follow the rules when driving cars and riding dirt bikes on Muriwai and Te Oneone Rangatira beaches this summer.
Visitors and locals will see more signs up and an increased presence of council staff and police officers on the beach enforcing safe and appropriate driving practices. Anyone found in breach of the driving rules can be charged on the spot or at a later date through photographic evidence.
A number of organisations are working together to promote the campaign including the Rodney District Council, Auckland Regional Council and the NZ Police.
Drivers and riders are reminded to:
- Drive slowly and watch for people on foot and horseback
- Stay off the sand dunes
- Only drive on hard sand
- Only enter the beach at the road access points (Coast Road and Rimmer Road)
- Respect the beach and other users
- Stick to the speed limit - North of the Coast Road access point the speed limit is 30 km/hr to just beyond Okiritoto Stream and 60 km/hr thereafter
Road rules apply on the beach so all vehicles should have a current WOF and registration and people should have the correct drivers licence.
To report a traffic incident call *555, for an emergency call 111 and for all other enquires phone Rodney District Council on 0800 426 5169.
An increase in accidents on the beach involving vehicles and beach goers and damage to the environment has lead to this crackdown on safety.
