Rodney to Host National Launch of Seaweek

‘Seaweek’ is a national celebration that runs in the first week of March to raise awareness of New Zealanders connection with the ocean. In tune with the theme ‘One Ocean – it starts with me’, activities across the Rodney District will focus on encouraging people to learn more about the diversity of the marine environment species and take action to protect it.

This year the national launch of Seaweek is being hosted by the Whangateau Harbour Care Group with support from the Rodney District Council, World Wildlife Fund and Auckland Regional Council. An interactive programme of free events has been planned for the last weekend in February at the Whangateau Hall and Domain.

On Saturday 28 February visitors can enjoy an exhibition of photographs showcasing Whangateau Harbour wildlife, glass bottom boat tours, guided snorkelling, an intertidal walk and a live display of small marine animals. On Sunday 1 March there will be a mini regatta of classic boats, kayaking demonstrations, waka paddling and the chance to take ride on a stream boat.

Seaweek activities continue through the week with five Rodney schools visiting Tawharanui Regional Park to learn about coastal restoration with DOC, the ARC and the Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Society.

A Goat Island Adventure Day has been organised by DOC for Saturday 7 March giving visitors the chance to take a closer look at rocky shore wildlife with marine photographers Tony and Jenny Enderby.

“We are lucky to enjoy such a beautiful and diverse coastline in Rodney,” says Rodney District Council’s Community Development Manager Paul Green.

“Seaweek is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the sea environment and for residents and visitors alike to learn more about the amazing creatures who inhabit it,” he adds.
