Ten top local students have been awarded scholarships valued at $2,000 by Rodney District Council.

The scholarships were presented by local Councillors at a special ceremony in December.

The scholarships were open to local students in the sixth and seventh forms who will be undertaking full-time tertiary study in the next academic year.

Applications were assessed against criteria relating to academic excellence and suitability for the student’s proposed course of study.  Local Councillors personally interviewed shortlisted applicants for the scholarships to help inform the decision making process.

The 2009 scholarship award winners were:

  • Bridie Jo O’Neill (Kaipara College)
  • Megan Thomas (Kingsway College)
  • Annelise Basevi (Mahurangi College)
  • Imogen Edwards (Mahurangi College)
  • Duncan Wu (Orewa College)
  • Anna Chow (Orewa College)
  • Claire Fell (Rodney College)
  • Vicki Gray (Whangaparaoa College)
  • Melissa Lucas (Whangaparaoa College)
  • Brendan Ginnever (Wentworth College)

In 2008 seven scholarships were granted, but this year the number increased to ten with scholarships being awarded to pupils from Whangaparaoa College and Kingsway College for the first time.

Rodney Mayor Penny Webster congratulated all of the scholarship recipients on their success at the ceremony.

“It is fantastic for the Council to be able to recognise and support such outstanding young people who, I am sure, will go on to achieve great things and make a real contribution to society”, she says.

She adds that she hopes the new Auckland Council will continue to recognise the achievements of young people within Rodney through scholarships in the future.
