A new series of free Create your Own Eden composting and worm farming workshops and advice centres have been organised across the Rodney district to encourage people to recycle their food scraps and garden waste.
The last Create Your Own Eden series was a huge success and attracted nearly 1,000 people who were keen to find out how they could make nutrient rich fertiliser for their gardens.

“People were especially keen to find out more about a new system of composting called Bokashi” says Sarah Stead, Rodney District Council’s Environmental Education Officer. “Bokashi bins are an excellent way of recycling food waste that can’t go into a worm farm like bread, paste, meat and fish. The compact bin is air tight and doesn’t smell so is ideal for small spaces and kitchen cupboards.”
A major draw card for the workshops is the opportunity for participants to meet experts who work on Rainbow Valley Farm. Set up over 20 years ago, this permaculture centre has become world famous for its sustainable living education programmes and is a real inspiration to others who wish to reduce their carbon footprint and protect the special nature of rural Rodney.
The next workshop, which will provide an introduction to composting, worm farming and Bokashi is being held in the Whangaparaoa Hall on Sunday the 30th of August between 2.30 and 4.30pm.
If you would like to book a place on the workshop please contact the Rodney District Council on 0800 426 5169 or email customerservice@rodney.govt.nz.
