A survey of Wellsford residents was conducted through the Rodney Times in April - May 2009. The Diamond Survey is a new approach to measuring the attractiveness of a village or town. The higher the score the more attractive the place is.
Respondents were asked to:
- Rate Wellsford on a scale of 1 to 10 on its attractiveness for Liveability, Workability, Visitability, and Investability.
- List its strengths and weaknesses as a place
The Results
Many people in Wellsford feel the town is well past its heyday, is struggling economically and desperately needs some vision.

Some Wellsford Strengths:
- Love the lake and beaches
- Affordable property
- Good community services - schools, halls, churches and clubs
- Friendly down to earth people
- Service centre for local farming and industry
- Excellent for tourists
Some Wellsford Weaknesses:
- Lack of a unified vision
- Unattractive main street
- Too many empty shops
- Crime levels high
- No walking tracks
- Lack of employment/business development
