Helensville Walking and Cycling Guide
Rodney District Council with pupils from Helensville Primary School together prepared a guide to help people enjoy the walking and cycling opportunities around Helensville.
“Walking and Cycling in Helensville” is a pamphlet with information on the location of local facilities such as playgrounds, walkways, and shopping areas. The pamphlet also has information on walking school buses, safety guidelines for walkers and cyclists and the amount of carbon emissions saved by each kilometre people walk or cycle.
Pupils from Room 8 at Helensville Primary School developed a map of the town included in the guide which shows where footpaths, reserves, post shops and other facilities located.
Rodney District Council provided the children, aged between 7 and 9, with pedometers and a walking wheel to measure distances and the students walked the routes shown on the map themselves, noting down various features around the town.
Walking and Cycling For Sustainable Transport Strategy
The Walking and Cycling for Sustainable Transport Strategy looks at offering walking and cycling as alternative modes of transport. The strategy is aimed at:
- reducing dependence on motor vehicles
- improving the environment
- improving access and mobility
- promoting public health.
The objective is to develop and maintain safe, direct, convenient and pleasant walking and cycling networks and supporting facilities for Rodney District.
The Walking and Cycling for Sustainable Transport Strategy was adopted by Rodney District Council in September 2007.
Part 1 – The Strategy 2005 to 2025 - this document sets out the vision, objectives and policies agreed on to work towards an increase in walking and cycling throughout the Rodney District over the next 20 years.
Part 2 – The Action Plan – this plan covers the four year period from 2005 – 2009. It will be updated in 2009 and every three years after that.
* Please note that walkways and cycle ways that are solely meant for recreational purposes are not included in this strategy as they do not qualify for Land Transport New Zealand funding. A separate strategy will be developed for recreational walking and cycling.
