A building records search is a service where the RDC locates any building permits and/or building consents which have been granted and which relate to a specific property and make these available for customers to view and copy.
Anyone can request a building records search for any property as the information they contain is for public knowledge. The file will have to be prepared by council property staff before it can be viewed.
Please note: RDC does NOT do property file or property bag searches.
How do I request one?
You will need to fill in an Building Records Search application form, indicating on the form how they wish to receive the information, e.g. by post, email, CD disk, appointment or collection of a paper report, returning it along with payment to one of our offices.
If you wish to make an appointment to view the file, not at Orewa but at one of the Service Centres, you will need to mark this clearly on the form.
Please note it may take up to 5 working days to locate records and retrieve information.

How much does it cost?
The fee for the preparation of a property file is $45.00 and can be paid by cash, eftpos, cheque or credit card (customers must present the card at the counter in person, they are not able to pay by credit card via the phone or internet). This includes monochrome copying/printing of up to 10 pages of any size A1-A4.
Please note: if you require a Resource Consent Records Search there will be an additional charge of $45.00.
How long does it take?
That depends on how much research we have to do on the property. Some of our information is held off-site, so usually it is several days before we can provide the information for you to view.
An appointment must be made to view the information. It can take up to five working days (generally less) to prepare a file if the file hasn't been viewed before. To make an appointment or check on the progress of a building records search please contact us.
