Rodney District is the home of two distinct coastlines, spectacular scenery
and an abundance of recreational activities.
Only 20–30 minutes from Auckland, the Rodney District has over 1000 kms of stunning coastline, from the calm waters of the East coast to the awesome surf of the West. Rodney offers a multitude of water-based activities including boating, sailing, year-round fishing, surfing, windsurfing, snorkelling and water-skiing. Divers can explore the magical underwater world of Goat Island Marine Reserve, showcasing a huge variety of marine life in the reefs and underwater cliffs and canyons. Off the coast are the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. Kawau, with the historic Mansion House typifying colonial New Zealand, is accessible daily by ferry from Sandspit wharf. Tiritiri Matangi Island, situated off the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, has been developed as an open bird sanctuary, home to the endangered Takahe and other rare birdlife. Ferries to the island leave from Gulf Harbour. Rodney also has Muriwai on the rugged West Coast with a rare on-shore gannet colony and dramatic scenery. For majestic views, the Kaipara Harbour is the largest enclosed harbour in the Southern hemisphere. Recreational tours of the Harbour leave from Helensville. Rodney District has six fabulous regional parks, with popular picnic spots and walks ranging from leisurely to extreme. The thermal mineral pools at Waiwera and Parakai provide therapeutic relaxation in conjunction with the wildest of water rides. Gulf Harbour on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula has an extensive marina, village and country club, complemented by canal-side dining, live entertainment, shopping and accommodation. Adjacent to Gulf Harbour village is one of New Zealand’s finest golf courses with spectacular backdrops and stunning coastal views. Rodney has a selection of courses throughout the District catering for all interests and abilities. You can also experience the product of renowned winemakers of Kumeu in the west and the exciting new vineyards of Matakana and Warkworth in the north. Rodney has award winning winemakers, wonderful restaurants, art and craft trails, antique shops and galleries. Shoppers can enjoy great diversity with factory shopping in Silverdale and boutique retail in Warkworth village or the region’s largest shopping complex, Pacific Plaza, on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.
