Waitoki Vision

The Waitoki Vision was adopted by the Council on the 22 October 2009.
The draft vision was first considered by the Council on 3 April 2008 and has since undergone public consultation.   Submitter’s comments were considered and appropriate changes were made to the draft document.
Hardcopies of the final document are available at the Council offices and on the website.

Waitoki Vision
The Waitoki Village Community Group (the ‘WVCG’) and the Rodney District Council have been working together to develop a Vision for Waitoki.  This process has involved public meetings, surveys, the opportunity to comment on a draft vision and the establishment of guiding principles from the Waitoki community.

The Guiding Principles from the Waitoki Community meetings and consultation (in order of Priority) were:

1. Rodney District Council maintain ownership of Kahikatea Flat Road
2. Maintain the current village status and ensure the environment remains intact
3. Manage growth and subdivision, in particular ensuring the viability of the Waitoki School.
4. Maintain the natural system of waterways
5. Traffic safety (including maintaining or lowering speed limit through village and proposed roundabout to slow traffic flow)

The guiding principles formed the basis of further consultation through a public survey which sought to build an understanding of the kind of future the community wants for Waitoki. The survey results were incorporated into the earlier material including the guiding principles to create this vision statement.

The ‘Draft Waitoki Vision’ incorporates the community’s aspirations for the future of Waitoki. When formulating the draft vision, the group was encouraged to think out 50 to 100 years into the future, in as much as what type of environment and community do they wish for Waitoki. The ‘picture’ painted in the vision should be reflected in the future decisions made by the Council and the WVCG.

The vision is a statement of the community’s expectations for the future of Waitoki. While it is a non-statutory document, it can be considered as a relevant matter in the policy planning processes undertaken by the council and it may be considered in support of any relevant statutory document in the consideration of resource consents.

It should also act as a guide for landowners and developers in the planning and design of their own projects in Waitoki.

The Waitoki Vision

Waitoki - a beautiful rural village
1. We want to manage our small rural location maintaining positive community spirit
2. We want to maintain our rural look, natural features, and open spaces
3. The village is to be the centre for the surrounding rural lifestyle community
4. We want managed growth to support our local school, businesses and community facilities
