Orewa Estuary - Combined Walkway/Cycleway

Rodney District Council (RDC) is investigating the construction of a combined footpath and cycleway along the Orewa Estuary coastline.  As part of this process, we invite you to give your thoughts and feedback on the proposal.

Sections of the path form part of a shared use walkway that will encircle the Orewa Estuary.  The Western Reserve and Maygrove sections are formed and in use and other sections are at various stages of design and construction.  The Maygrove section has recently been constructed.  The intention is that with the completion of the entire ring route, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the path for both recreation and commuting and it will form an integral part of the RDC footpath and cycle infrastructure network.

The existing route around the Orewa Estuary is used by pedestrians and cyclists.  Some parts traverse grassed reserve with sections of stairs, steep slopes and is often muddy in areas.  This proposal will provide an all-weather concrete surface with a 2.5m path and reduce some of the more challenging slopes (where possible) to allow the path to be utilised by everyone from young children cycling to school, to senior citizens.

The path will look similar to the section of the walkway recently constructed near Maygrove Drive just west of Orewa College.  The path will include the option to install lighting for security purposes.  We will not install lighting when the path is constructed, but may do so at a later date.

The information sheet map, detailed area maps of the proposed "Southern Link" and "Maygrove West" sections form are available online by clicking on the title, at our offices at 50 Centreway Road, Orewa and at the Orewa Library.
