Road Opening Notices

What is a Road Opening Notice?

A Road Opening Notice (RON) is needed when organisations or private contractors work on or near council services within the road reserve (area between boundary and boundary). Includes work in, on, along, over, across or under the road.

Note: Not to be confused with Road Opening Applications (applications for work that is requested to be carried out that is linked to a building consent application, e.g. connections or disconnections to sewers or close to sewers).

How to apply for a RON

Simply fill out a Road Opening Notice and send / deliver to any Council office.

Applications must be made at least 15 days prior to the work commencing although they are usually turned around in a week. The RON must be granted before the work can commence unless in an emergency.

Traffic Management Plans

  • A Traffic Management Plan is required for all Road Opening Notices.
  • If the work to be done does not involve ‘opening the road’ e.g. scaffolding work or aerial work on existing poles, then the applicant ONLY requires a Traffic Management Plan.
  • If you are unsure or do not know what is involved with obtaining a Traffic Management Plan please contact us on 0800 426 5169.
