Workplace Travel Plans

What is a Workplace Travel Plan?

A Workplace Travel Plan is a set of practical strategies which aim to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips to, and from a workplace, and increase sustainable transport options.  Workplace Travel Plan’s are developed and implemented by the workplace in partnership with the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) and local authority as part of Travel Wise.

TravelWise, a partnership between Auckland local authorities and ARTA, contributes to the region’s overall plan to create a world class transport network that makes Auckland an even better place to live, work and play.

How does a Workplace Travel Plan work?

Baseline surveys are undertaken at the workplace to find out about existing staff travel patterns.  These results will are then analysed and the results are used to decide on travel behaviour change initiatives.

Travel behaviour change initiatives that may come out of a travel plan can include things such as providing rideshare spaces, joining the Take a Mate carpooling scheme, subsidised public transport tickets, discounted running gear or participating in events such as the 350 International Day of Global Action.

The Council’s Workplace Travel Plan

As part of Council's Workplace Travel Plan, staff have access to the Take a Mate website, car-poolers can apply for preferential rideshare parking spaces and staff are encouraged to take park in events such as Feet Beat. Staff can also utilise Council bicycles to attend close meetings.

Staff also recently participated in developing a walking map for the Orewa Area, which shows quick access routes and walking areas located near the Council offices on Centreway Road.  Anyone is welcome to download and utilise this walking map.
