Objective of the strategy
The objective of the Hibiscus Coast Wastewater Strategy was to identify a long-term option for collecting, treating, and disposing of sewage from the Hibiscus Coast Communities.
Decisions made after review process
After a comprehensive review of the options available, the decision was made to to integrate and upgrade the Orewa and Whangaparaoa Wastewater/Sewerage systems.
The following Index of Papers provides a summary of that review process.
Overview of projects
The Strategy will be undertaken in three projects:
- The Hibiscus Coast Trunk Pipeline Upgrade
- The Army Bay Wastewater/Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade
- The Orewa Oxidation Ponds Redevelopment
- Installation of underground storage tanks at the Stanmore and Tindalls Wastewater Pump Stations is now complete.
- These tanks will be used in emergencies (such as high rainfall and power outages) to store wastewater that cannot be pumped by the pump station.
- They enable system operators to sort out problems before wastewater overflows into the environment.
- The Stanmore tank will offer a minimum of four hours storage in the worse conditions (wet weather with a power cut) while the Tindalls tank will provide seven hours storage.
- The Strategy also involves installing a new trunk pipeline from Silverdale North to the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.
- This pipeline will provide the backbone to a system that will enable the community flows to be pumped to the Army Bay Sewage Treatment Plant for treatment and disposal.
- It is designed to be able to service the community growth until at least 2051.
