Why do we need Planning Rodney?

A vision such as Vision Rodney is to a large extent expressed in a physical manner – what happens on the ground.  This must be managed and planned for and cannot be left to chance.

The district’s population is expected to grow by another 20,000 people over the next 10 years, making it even more important to manage and plan for the future.

Planning Rodney aims to set the framework for how we should manage and plan for this future in a sustainable way.

Also, the Council attempts to incorporate Vision Rodney in its daily work.

We need a strategic approach to steer our own activity towards Vision Rodney in a planned, coordinated and phased manner.

This way we can focus our efforts and resources – and help achieve the things our communities want.

Where Planning Rodney comes from.

Planning Rodney was initiated by the Rodney District Council in an endeavour to giveffect to Vision Rodney. It therefore takes its direction from Vision Rodney.

The direction provided by Vision Rodney was supplemented by earlier consultation and data, information and trend analysis. Planning Rodney is the result of the synthesis of these various inputs.

Once the draft document had been developed, communities were consulted, using the Special Consultative Procedure in Section 83 of the Local Government Act 2002. The submission and hearing process resulted in numerous changes to the draft document.

On the basis of strong public support emerging from the consultation process, the Rodney District Council adopted Planning Rodney in December 2008.

How Planning Rodney relates to other plans & strategies.

Planning Rodney will have a direct influence on other Council plans and strategies such as the Long Term Council Community Plan (LTCCP) and the District Plan.

It will steer and guide these plans, and therefore Council's future activities and investment in the district.
