Waitoki Structure Plan
Rodney District Council is in the process of developing a draft Structure Plan for Waitoki. The Waitoki Village Community Group was formed in late 2005 and has assisted the Council to carry out surveys and host public meetings which enabled a draft vision for Waitoki to be developed to guide the Structure Plan. The group’s mandate is to:
- Work in line with community guiding principles; and
- Commence the structure planning process for the Waitoki Community
A draft vision was released for public consultation in April 2008. The draft vision released for consultation was:
"Waitoki – A Beautiful Rural Village·
- we like our small rural location with positive community spirit
- we like our rural look, natural features, and open spaces
- the village is to be the centre for the surrounding rural community
- we value our local school, businesses and community facilities."

Next Steps
Consultation on the draft vision has now closed. The next step of the process will be for the Waitoki Village Community Group together with the Council to review submissions on the draft vision and agree whether any changes are needed to the vision, and if so, what these should be.
Following this the Council and the Waitoki Village Community Group will carry out further research, including explaining the structure plan process, the ‘Vision for Waitoki’, seeking further input from the community for their aspirations for Waitoki, and seeking confirmation from the community in terms of what issues they want investigated. This will be followed by the following phases:
1. Constraints and opportunities research - such as identifying potential hazards around the town which may constrain development and identifying future infrastructure needs
2. Development of Options;
3. Preparation of Draft Structure Plan document;
4. Adoption of Structure Plan; and
5. Implementation – any variations to the District Plan that may arise and/or changes to other documents such as the Long Term Plan, if any is applicable.
Progress on the structure plan process can be followed by checking up on the process diagram here.
