The Reserve Management Plan was adopted by the Community and Environment Committee on the 15th of March 2007.
The Reserve Management Plan provides the general direction for the management and development of the site.
Wilson Cement Works Conservation Plan
This conservation plan concerns the ruins of the Wilson's Cement Works at Warkworth on the Mahurangi River.
The purpose of the plan is firstly to assess the significance of the site and the various structures located there. Secondly, it provides a series of conservation policies aimed at safeguarding the heritage values of the place. The plan also includes a condition report and a schedule of remedial work.
The plan was commissioned by the Rodney District Council and was written by Dave Pearson, principal of Dave Pearson Architects Limited. The historic research was undertaken by Kate Hill.
Deciding the future for Warkworth's Old Cement Works
The Council bought Wilson Cement Works in 2003. The Category 1 Historic Place, one of New Zealand's first 'portland' cement works, was abandoned in 1929.
A reference group including local residents, councillors and Council staff has been set up to help develop future plans for the cement works ruins. One of the groups first jobs has been to ensure public safety including fencing a number of the areas with holes or unstable ruins.
The community, as well as the reference group, have shared their long-term thoughts for the site as part of the consultation process.
