The catchment study area covers approximately the eastern half of the principal Orewa River East Catchment Area. Currently almost the entire catchment study area is utilised for medium density residential use, with a large central business and commercial area.
Additionally, there is future development planned within the area for high density residential use. Historically the catchment has suffered from flooding problems related to the relatively flat topography, and it is this principle issue, which the Rodney District Council (RDC) wishes to investigate and address.
The Purpose of this Plan
To develop an integrated management approach to stormwater in Orewa.
This plan outlines and incorporates the key issues and catchment objectives developed with RDC. The report also assesses the effects on the environment of stormwater discharges, details stormwater treatment/flow, suitability of identified devices and strategies, flood control options and cost estimates.
In order to protect and enhance the identified sensitive receiving environments, there is a need to develop a set of guidelines with respect to the management of stormwater in the catchment. Several studies and previous reports have been undertaken in the area, and this ICNMP serves to bring this work together under a common management perspective. RDC also wishes to encourage the use of low-impact stormwater management practices where practicable, and the Orewa CBD catchment presents an opportunity to incorporate these principles to best service the present and indeed future community.
