Anti-litter Campaigns

Litter is a real problem in the Auckland region. When it rains, litter is easily washed into storm-water drains and out to sea. It is often washed up on our beaches and poses a threat to wildlife. Birds, fish, dolphins and whales often mistake rubbish for food and can get tangled up plastic bags and bottle rings.

Many people think that it’s ok to drop litter because someone else will pick it up – but picking up litter an expensive business - did you know that it costs over $1 million dollars a year to tidy up the litter from the public areas in our district?

Rodney District Council is a member of Keep New Zealand Beautiful and part of the regional ‘Be a Tidy Kiwi’ campaign that aims to address the problem of litter in the Auckland region.

Every year a number of people help to wage war on the litter problem by participating in clean-up events across the district. If you would like to plan a clean-up event please contact our Environmental Education Coordinator who will be able to assist you by providing rubbish bags, health and safety advice and information on how to dispose of the litter collected.
