Adopt A Dog

Rodney Animal Control Officers from time to time locate dogs which have been either abandoned or surrendered to the Council by their owners.

Some of these dogs are suitable for re-homing. Sadly, each year, a number of dogs which are suitable for adoption are euthanized simply because the Council is unable to find a suitable adoptive owner.

If you are interested in adopting such a dog then the Council would be interested in hearing from you. Please complete our registration of interest form below.  We will keep your details on record and contact you when any suitable dogs become available for adoption.

All dogs are temperament tested prior to being put up for adoption.

Adoption Process
During this application process, and before any adoption is arranged, an Animal Control Officer will be checking that the property is suitable for a dog of the size/type desired.

Once confirmed as suitable, the applicant will be advised as soon as a dog becomes available and after introductions are made between the dog and adoptee, all things going well, the adoption will take place.

The dog must be neutered, registered and micro-chipped prior to leaving the control of the Council.

Costs
Puppies: $250   (covers fostering, vaccinations, registration and neutering)

All other dogs:$195 (covers vaccinations, registration and neutering)

Fostering
There are times when dogs suitable for adoption are unable to be adopted out promptly. Rather than have the dog stay within the Councils shelter it is sometimes preferable to have these dogs fostered out until such time as it is adopted.

If you are interested in fostering dogs, please contact the Adoption officer.

Dogs Available For Adoption
Dogs available for adoption from the Northern Animal Shelter can be viewed online at Pets on the Net and by entering Northern Animal Shelter in to the search function.  All dogs available for adoption have passed temperament testing to ensure they are safe for re-homing.

For information on dogs we currently have available for adoption please contact the Adoption officer, alternatively you can register your interest to adopt a dog below.
