Dog Control

Reporting a dog control problem

Reporting a problem with a dog can be done both during business and after hours.

There are a number of issues which may prompt you to contact us:

Roaming dogs

Dogs found roaming in any public place may be impounded whether they are registered or unregistered. Fees are payable for the release of impounded dogs.

Barking dogs

Barking is normal canine behaviour and is permitted. However, it is an offence to allow a dog to create a nuisance by persistent loud barking or howling.

Where a nuisance is created, the Council has the power to require the nuisance stopped, or upon service of a notice, require the dog(s) to be removed from the property.

We recommend, if you feel comfortable doing so, talking to the owner first before contacting Council. The dog owner may not be aware of your concern and could take steps to improve the situation. Alternatively, contact us and we will investigate.

Dog attacks

Dog attacks are unacceptable behaviour. Council has the power to seize dogs that attack people or animals. If you have witnessed a dog attack contact us immediately and we will investigate.

Lost and found dogs

If you have lost your dog contact us to see if we have your dog reported as found. If you find someone else’s dog please let us know and we will be in touch with its owner.
