Possums
Possums have become one of the most damaging pests in New Zealand and have a serious impact on native plants and birdlife.
For advice on baiting and trapping possums on private land please contact the council or a pest control company in the Yellow Pages.
If a possum stuck in a chimney or roof space, open as many exit routes as possible to allow the possum to make its own way out. If the possum is still there after 24 hours, contact a pest control company.
Rats and Mice
If you feel that rats or mice are accumulating and/or are causing a possible health hazard on a Rodney park please contact us. Tips for controlling rats and mice on private property:
- Bait and traps are available from most hardware stores and supermarkets.
- Bacon and chocolate are good for baiting the trap
- Reduce food sources and habitats by cutting long grass, securing food stores and picking up fallen fruit.
- Eliminate access to building – check pipes, overhanging trees, power lines or holes in the floor – any entry points should be blocked off.
If all attempts prove unsuccessful please contact one of our Environmental Health Officers.
Ferrets, stoats and rabbits

Wasps and bees
If you are concerned about a wasp or bee nest on public land please contact us. If the next is on private property, please contact your local pest control operator in the Yellow Pages.
Mosquitoes
The first and best defence against these pests is to eliminate the places where they breed. Here are a few suggestions:
- Remove water in old tires, tin cans, buckets, drums, bottles or other places where mosquitoes might breed
- Be sure to check clogged gutters and flat roofs that may have poor drainage. Make sure water storage containers are covered tightly with a lid or with a mesh screen.
- Unused swimming pools should be covered or drained during the mosquito season
- Change the water in bird baths and plant pots or drip trays at least once each week
- Store boats covered or upside down, or remove rainwater weekly
- Empty your pet's water bowl daily
- Level the ground around your home so water can run off and not collect in low spots
- Keep weeds and tall grass cut short; adult mosquitoes look for shady places to rest during the hot daylight hours
