Respect Rodney - Graffiti Eradication Project
Graffiti and vandalism is a serious community issue which can lower property values and encourage more vandalism and other types of crime to occur. It suggests that the neighbourhood doesn't care and isn't able to cope with the problem.
Report Graffiti
Phone the Rodney District Council on 0800 426 5169 and report it to your local police station. If you see someone tagging, ring 111 and report it to the police immediately.
Record Graffiti
Take a digital photo of graffiti or tagging and email it to the Rodney District Council at customerservice@rodney.govt.nz (photos should be no bigger than 500kb).
Provide the following information:
- Exact location of graffiti
- Date of when it appeared
- Date of the photo taken
- Size of the graffiti
- What type of surface the graffiti is on
Remove Graffiti
If graffiti is on public property or is offensive e.g. racist or contains foul language, please call us immediately so we can arrange for it to be removed as soon as possible.
The rapid removal of graffiti has proven to be the best deterrent in combating graffiti and it sends a clear message that graffiti will not be tolerated. Keep some paint handy and simply paint over any tags that appear.
If Your Property Has Been Tagged:
- Remove graffiti as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours
- If you are removing graffiti for the first time, try different methods on a small area to ensure you don't damage the surface further
- We suggest you try using dishwashing liquid first and then try solvents such as methylated spirits, paint thinner, oven cleaner or a branded graffiti removal product such as Resene Graffiti Cleaner
- Chemical removal can be a particularly effective method of removing permanent markers or removing graffiti from steel surfaces
- The chemicals in graffiti removal products can be hazardous, so always wear protective clothing, including a mask. Store out of reach of children.
- If graffiti has been painted over trees, rub the damaged areas with baking soda and rinse thoroughly with water
- Clean unpainted walls or fences by sanding or water-blasting
