Visits & Resources

Our Environmental Education team is available upon request to deliver talks to schools and offer resource suggestions for the classroom. Typical requests include talks on freshwater ecosystems, worm farming, recycling, climate change and sustainable technology.

Useful curriculum-related resources can be downloaded from the following websites:

Te Kete Ipurangi - the Online Learning Centre

The 'Education for Sustainability' page is probably the best place to start when planning a lesson with an environmental focus.

ARC City Issues focuses on some of the major environmental issues facing an expanding urban Auckland region. Suitable for Years 0 to 8.

ARC Waste and Recycling Sheets suitable for Years 7 and above.

The Earth Day Network has a range of downloadable lesson plans.

The Global Education Centre aims to develop an understanding of the factors and underlying causes that surround poverty, injustice, conflict, health and environmental degradation around the world.

The Enviroschools Website has produced a series of resources in association with popular TV series WASTED.

Check our Green Calendar for environmental events as they happen.

The Department of Conservation also organise a number of field trips in the district including trips to Tiritiri Matangi, Kawau Island and Okakari Point Marine Reserve (Goat Island). For information and bookings please visit the DOC website.

For freshwater ecology topics why not arrange a Wai Care monitoring session. Suitable for Years 7-13, students can learn how to assess water quality, identify freshwater invertebrates and develop an understanding of stream dynamics.

To arrange a rocky shore ecology visit, go to the Goat Island website www.discovergoatisland.co.nz.

There is a strong link between water quality and land management, so groups also learn about the many sources of pollution and how they can be reduced. Please contact our Environmental Education Coordinator for more information.
