Used silage wrap, chemical containers, feed and fertilizer bags and high density polyethylene (HDPE) drums can all be collected from local farms in Rodney.

The system allows farmers to recycle a range of plastics including silage wrap, silage pit/bunker covers, Chemical containers (1 to 60 litre) plastic packaging and woven polypropylene feed and fertiliser bags. Only the net baling twine can not be recycled and must be left out of the liners.

Silage Wrap Recycling Collection Service
Until now the only methods of disposing of silage wrap have been burning, burying or taking it to your local transfer station.

The council and the Community Business and Environment Centre (CBEC) are working collectively with Agpac and Replas and now have a collection system for the region to recycle silage wrap.

Bin abd baleBin and liner System
Heavy duty plastic bins  (Agpac supplies storage bins for $530 plus GST) with a secure lid and plastic recyclable liners (for $15 each plus GST) which hold up to 150 wrappers are available for purchase.  Silage wrap is disposed of in the bin and once the bin is full the bag can be set aside for collection at a cost of $40 per liner collected.  Collections will occur twice a year in Rodney.

Alternatively, you can make your own bin as long it is strong, has a secure lid and is made to the same dimensions as the Agpac bin.

Step1: To Recycle Silage Wrap:

  • Register with CBEC Eco Solutions (refer to contact details below) and purchase a bin liner and optional storage bin
  • Set up the liner with a bin or similar structure.
  • Fill the liner daily to avoid contamination of wrap.
  • Pack the liner tightly – each liner is designed to hold 150 bale wrappers.
  • When the liner is full, tie it off and attach an identification tag*

*Note: All bagged material is tagged for farmer identification purposes. Bales with unacceptable contamination will be returned at the owner’s expense. When a farmer registers for the programme, CBEC will supply advice on how to deal with contamination and what levels are acceptable.

Step 2: Prepare For Collection

  • Set the liners aside ready for collection
  • Store in an area with safe access and hard standing
  • Beware of overhanging wires and trees .

Disposing Of Dead Stock
Livestock carcasses can pose environmental and health risks if disposed of properly. They can contaminate streams and groundwater and their smell can attract flies and other vermin. To dispose of dead stock responsibly:

  • Bury at least 50m away from any watercourse, water supply bore or home
  • Cover the burial site to prevent nuisance smells and access by vermin
  • Remove dead animals from streams or watercourses for proper disposal

Do not:

  • Bury dead animals within 50 metres of any watercourse or home
  • Dump dead animals in streams or watercourses
  • Dump dead animals in your dairy effluent ponds
  • Use a gully as an uncovered disposal site
  • Burn dead animals
