Hazardous waste includes material that is harmful to health and the environment and includes materials such as: rechargable/wet-cell batteries, cleaning products, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, pool chemicals, solvents, glues, ecobulbs and used oil.
The Council operates two free hazardous waste drop-off facilities; Metrowaste Recovery Centre, Foundry Rd Silverdale and Mason Bins Resource Recovery Centre, Lawrie Rd Snells Beach. Some charges may apply for used oil.
The ARC offer a free hazardous waste collection service called
Hazmobile that takes place throughout Auckland at different times of the year. If you would like to be sent a copy of the Hazmobile leaflet in the post, please contact us or visit their website www.hazmobile.govt.nz.
Some types of waste need more specialised disposal or can be recycled:
Asbestos should be removed using OSH approved professionals who can be found in the Yellow Pages under A. For further advice, call the ARC Envrioline on 0800 806 040.
Liquid Paint can be disposed of at all Placemakers outlets and Reid Paints, free of charge. Please visit www.placemakers.co.nz and www.enviropaints.co.nz for more details. Waste paint can also be taken to most Resense ColorShops - visit www.resene.co.nz/paintwise for details. More information on recycling different types of paint can be found in the Hazmobile leaflet.
Eco-bulbs should not be placed in your household rubbish if they are unbroken. At present the best way to dispose of them is to take them to your local Resouce Recovery Centre. For broken bulbs, wear gloves to place the pieces in a plastic bag and wrap with paper. This can be placed in your household rubbish along with the materials used to clean up the breakage. More information on safe disposal can be downloaded here.
