Noise Control

Complaints about excessive noise are dealt with by our Envirnomental Health Officers.  Excessive noise is noise that unreasonably interferes with your peace, comfort and convenience.

Making A Noise Complaint

To make a noise complaint (during business or after hours) please contact us.

If the noise is confirmed as excessive, the music (or noisy equipment) must immediately be turned down to a reasonable level. If Council receives more complaints of excessive noise within 72 hours, Council and the Police can seize the noise-offending equipment.

Construction, maintenance & demolition work noise

Construction type activities include earthmovers, bulldozers, jackhammers, sandblasters, chainsaws, and road construction work and maintenance. There are no strict rules about the hours that construction activities may take place; however, the following should be used as a guide:

Day  Suggested Construction Times
Mon-Fri 7am - 7pm
Saturday  8am - 1pm
Sunday Noisy construction to be avoided

Light domestic maintenance work on Sundays or public holidays such as mowing lawns and trimming hedges is considered a reasonable activity, and may take place outside these times.

Return of seized (stereo) equipment

An application for the return of seized equipment may be made by the owner of the equipment, or the person from whom it was seized. Processing of an application will cost $360.

Complete and send back the following form:
Application for Restitution of Property Seized  (21k)

The application will be considered by the District Plan & Regulatory Committee. A personal appearance by the applicant is recommended. If equipment is to be returned, the Council’s costs in seizing and storing the equipment must be paid before it is released. If the Committee refuses to return the equipment, the applicant can appeal to the Environment Court for its return.

If equipment is not claimed within 6 months of the date of seizure, or its return has been refused by the District Plan & Regulatory Committee, it will be sold or disposed of.
