Rugby World Cup 2011

Rodney District Council is working to prepare our district for the Rugby World Cup 2011.

Together with other local Councils in the Auckland Region, Rodney District Council is working hard to bring as much activity as possible to the Auckland region to optimise local benefits.

We want to make sure that Rodney communities and businesses benefit from the opportunity to engage with this international event and the visitors it brings.

This is to maximise the economic benefits to our district and also so our residents and communities can take part and enjoy being part of the third largest event in the world.

We expect at least 60,000 international visitors to come to New Zealand with Auckland as the main entry point. About 2,000 international media are also expected to be in New Zealand.

The 2011 Rugby World Cup is expected to attract a television audience of more than four billion people worldwide.  The World Cup is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Auckland and Rodney to the world.

The event has the potential to generate $267 million of direct economic benefits for the Auckland region.

Rodney District Council is working with key organisations from throughout the Auckland region to help prepare for Rugby World Cup 2011 and optimise the benefits to our district.

The Council’s focus is to ensure RWC 2011 is an opportunity that Rodney communities and businesses are involved in, and benefit from.

How is Rodney Planning for the World Cup?

Rodney District Council is working with other Councils in the Auckland region to prepare for the World Cup and ensure that Rodney businesses benefit from this global event, and that Rodney residents have the opportunity to join in this unique six week festival of rugby.

  • Rodney, together with other Auckland local authorities submitted a regional bid to host a number of World Cup games in 2008.   Eden Park has been confirmed as the venue for the Rugby World Cup final.
  • In particular, the Council is supporting a bid to bring the World Cup to Rodney by hosting a team at Silverdale.  We’ll know about this towards the end of the year.  Click here to find out  more about Team Hosting.
  • Rodney District Council is also part of the key steering groups helping to plan for the World Cup.
  • In the future we will be working closely with key organisations in our District and community groups to make sure that Rodney residents are part of the World Cup celebrations.
  • Specific plans are also being made to make sure that Rodney maximises the marketing and tourism opportunities associated with the World Cup by promoting our District to Rugby audiences.

We want to make sure that Rodney communities and businesses are fully involved in the World Cup and that we take advantage of all of the opportunities to benefit from the World Cup.
