It’s a fact of life that from time to time
vehicles are abandoned. (A vehicle,
which could be a car, trailer etc) can
be regarded abandoned if:
- It is parked on a public roadway and
- It has been there for an uncommon length of time, and the owner cannot be found, and/or
- It is unroadworthy.
Reporting an abandoned vehicle
You can contact us to report abandoned vehicles on public property needing removal. Please supply the following information:
- Where is the vehicle located?
- Does the vehicle have registration plates? If so, obtain the registration number.
- How long has the vehicle been there?
- Any other relevant details, e.g. is the owner of the vehicle known?
Timeframe for removal
Removal of vehicles can take up to 3 to 4 weeks, as there are a series of steps that Council must follow before lawfully removing a vehicle:
- A Council inspector will visit and assess the vehicle within 1 working day of Council receiving the complaint.
- A letter will be sent to the last registered owner requesting removal within 7 days of the date of the letter.
- After 7 days the Council inspector will revisit vehicle and if it remains, it will be removed.
Removal of old vehicles from private property
Council does not remove vehicles from private property – it is the property owner’s responsibility to deal with cars and car wrecks on their own property.
