To encourage responsible dog ownership we offer a reduced registration fee for people who achieve ‘selected dog owner’ status (formerly known as ‘Responsible Dog Owner status).
How to apply
Owners who can meet certain criteria may apply for the "Selected Dog Owner" status. This involves:
- passing a property inspection
- being tested on good dog ownership
- having no prior record of dog offences
- ensuring that any dog owned has been consistently registered.
If granted, an additional rebate of fees applies for the next and following registration years – owners do not have to apply for the status in subsequent years but are automatically considered to be Selected Dog Owners.
Owners may apply for Selected Dog Owner status at any time but the rebate on registration fees will not take effect until the following registration year (commencing 1 July). Applications must be made by 1 May each year to be eligible for any fee reduction in the forthcoming registration year.

Transferring Selected Dog Owner status to Rodney District
Selected Dog Owner status (or similar, i.e. Responsible Dog Owner etc.) is transferable to Rodney District subject to completion of an application form and passing a property inspection.
Selected Dog Owner transfers automatically qualify for the Selected Dog Owners amount regardless of when the transfer took place (i.e. the 1 May cut-off date does not apply).
