Sandspit Development
In 2002 a new draft development plan for Sandspit was released for public
comment and submissions. Several of the submissions promoted the concept of a
small boat harbour at the end of the spit which would also allow the resolution
of some issues concerning the ticket offices.
The Council agreed that this was a concept worth pursuing and accordingly a
designer was engaged to work with a number of user-group representatives to come
up with a scheme that could be promoted for approval via the Development plan
process.
There were five meetings with the user groups (including Kawau Island
representatives) and the plans and sketches prepared as a result of those
discussions are attached below.
Key design components of proposal
- New ticket office building owned by the Council.
- Individual Ticket offices within the premises to be leased to operators.
- Protected small boat harbour provided.
- Separation of commercial and recreational activities.
- Weather protection for ferry passengers.
- Tie-up areas for Kawau residents and visitors.
- Possibility for staged development.
Next Steps
The next steps are likely to be as follows:
- Review proposal with Marina Developer (This has been done. No obvious
practical problems).
- Review technical feasibility and likely costs. (This has been done. The
technical feasibility has been established and indicative costs prepared).
- Review funding options. (This is underway as at May 2004).
- Report back to Council on feasibility, costs and funding options. (One
possible option might just be to address the ticket office situation and have
the small boat harbour as a longer term objective subject to funding
availability).
- Incorporate final recommendations into Draft Management Plan for public
comment or submissions.
- Management Plan adopted.
- Implementation.
It should be clear from the above that a formal public process will be
required prior to any solution seeing adopted.
