Window on Rodney is is an interim monitoring report presenting an overview of the place, the people and the environment. It was produced in September 1999 and presents an overview of the key characteristics of Rodney District's environment. It describes a District with varied landscapes, a range of natural resources, a rich history and an increasingly diverse population involved in a variety of enterprises.
This report demonstrates that the District is changing. The District's population is growing, urban areas are expanding and are being more intensively developed. There is more traffic using the roads and the type of land use in rural areas has diversified.
Not all change is cause for concern. Some changes are clearly for the better, while others show deteriorating conditions that should be a concern to the community and the council.
The report shows that there are both opportunities and difficulties posed by the natural and physical environment for the people who live and work within Rodney District. There are difficulties associated with managing risks posed by natural hazards and managing the adverse effects of activities upon the environment.
It is often the cumulative effect of activities, with many people doing much the same thing that can lead to deterioration of the environment.
Monitoring our environment will help to improve resource and environmental management and the performance of the District in promoting sustainable management.
We hope you find the following report interesting, but it is also intended to stimulate efforts to improve environmental performance by yourself, your organisation, your business, your family and your neighbourhood.
Council, in its capacity as a service provider and environmental management agency, will also strive for enhanced levels of environmental performance in the District.
