Metro Park

Rodney District Council intends to prepare a Reserve Management Plan for Metro Park in Silverdale North.

About Metro Park

It is anticipated that Metro Park will cater predominantly for local sporting requirements and will also include informal recreation areas.

  • Metro Park forms the most significant area of open space within the Silverdale North development area and is adjacent to a significant residential development area.

  • Approximately 34 hectares located adjacent to the Orewa estuary on Leigh Road, Silverdale North.

  • It is expected that there will be a mix of passive and active recreational activities provided for on this site.

  • The site is flat coastal land in close proximity to four schools.

  • Development principles for this site:

  1. To create a premier park which integrates the recreational needs of the Hibiscus Coast, Silverdale and Orewa areas and to enhance the character of Silverdale North.

  2. To address the recreational needs of the Hibiscus Coast, Silverdale and Orewa for the next 10–15 years.

  3. To integrate both passive and active recreation within the surrounding land uses to enhance the character of the Silverdale North area.

  4. To create a premier reserve that will set the precedent for future reserve developments in the district.

Preliminary concept plans

Initial concepts plans have been developed to explore potential options for the layout of the reserve. These concepts have included three fixed elements that will be required on the reserve as part of its development. These elements are:

  • The inclusion of detention ponds to treat stormwater before it enters the Orewa estuary.
  • The development of a recreation centre on the southern corner of the park.
  • The partial retention of the existing oxidation ponds for ongoing waste water infrastructure.

The design and use of all other areas will be developed through the consultation process as recreational demand is clarified. This includes the use of sports field areas, appropriate locations for car parking and changing facilities and whether to develop the remaining oxidation ponds for passive water recreation or sports fields.
