Why recycle?

All members of society are responsible for looking after the environment, and for the impact of products and wastes they make, use and discard.

Every Local Authority (Council) is principally responsible for implementing waste policies in their local communities. The Rodney District Council (RDC) has adopted their Zero Waste Plan (ZWP), with the goal of “Zero waste to landfill by 2020”.

To achieve this goal a number of initiatives have been identified, of which kerbside recycling is one of the first steps. Recycling is a way of promoting personal responsibility for waste and to encourage waste reduction.

Kerbside recycling is something that is easy to do, creating lower waste costs and benefiting the society as well as the environment. The RDC have chosen two leading recycling companies in the form of Streetsmart Ltd and CHH Fullcircle (Paperchase)  to carry out this beneficial service. Fullcircle (Paperchase) currently offer a national kerbside paper recycling service and Streetsmart are the largest recycling company in NZ and are the incumbent recycling collectors for Auckland City, Manukau and Papakura.

Who is eligible for the recycling service?

The service is for ALL households, rural and urban. The service is NOT available to businesses/commercial/schools.

Schools and recycling

Schools are not officially part of the kerbside recycling programme as the service is rates funded. Initially the service is for householders only but we will address adding further serviced properties at a later date.

Commercial recycling

For businesses and commercial premises wanting to recycle, you will need to make your own arrangements. Collections can be arranged with:

  • Auckland Glass Recyclers. Phone 636 6415 (HBC & Western wards only).
  • Paper Reclaim. Phone 09 571 0242.
  • Mason Bins.  Phone 09 425 8567.
  • There will be costs associated with these services.
  • Alternatively, the Whangaparaoa Road Depot is open 7 days free of charge.

Cost of the recycling service?

The cost of the recycling service is approximately $25.00 per household. This cost is covered (along with other initiatives) by the budget allocated to the Zero Waste Management Plan that was established to reduce waste in Rodney District. While a portion of the cost is indirectly included in the annual rates paid, there is no specific fixed amount in the rates allocated to this service.

How does recycling work?

If you a new resident or home please contact the Council to arrange a bin on 0800 426 5169.

  • Urban households (HBC and townships) will receive a weekly service with a 45L bin.
  • Rural households (all remaining Rodney areas) will receive a fortnightly service with a 70L bin.
  • Material to be recycled includes glass bottles and jars, aluminium and steel cans, plastic grades 1, 2 & 5.
  • Paper and cardboard is to be bundled separately and placed NEXT to the recycling bin. This will be collected by Fullcircle (Paperchase) in the normal manner on the same day as the recycling collection.

Place your clean, squashed recyclables (as listed below) in the bin and put it out on the kerb on your collection day by 7am. Paper is to be bundled and placed NEXT to the recycling bin.

It is preferable not to put the bin out the night before to deter theft of/from the bin and the empty recycling bin should not be left on the kerb after collection.

Ownership and number of bins

  • Each household in Rodney will receive a recycling bin.
  • All recycling bins will be the property of the RDC.
  • Customers may not request an extra bin. There is only one bin per eligible property (or dwelling) available at this stage. However, if there are two dwellings on the one property then an additional bin may be requested. If your bin is stolen or broken, contact the Council for a replacement.
  • Recycling bins are allocated to each particular property and should not be taken to a new property.

What can I recycle?

  • All glass bottles and jars
  • Aluminium and steel cans
  • Plastic bottle grades 1 (e.g. soft drink bottles) & 2 (e.g. milk bottles)
  • Plastic containers grade 5 (e.g. ice cream containers)

What can’t I recycle?

The following materials that are not suitable for the recycling bin may be disposed of at one of the recycling depots listed below. There may be a fee for this service.

Any dirty or contaminated products.

Glass

  • Blue or black glass e.g. Nescafe coffee jars (brown, green and clear glass are all ok)
  • Ceramics
  • Crystal
  • Window
  • Reinforced
  • Mirror
  • Pyrex and arcoroc tableware
  • Frosted
  • Broken
  • Light bulbs

These types of glass contain other materials that cannot be recycled

Plastics – the following types of plastics are more difficult to recycle, less environmentally and economically viable and are often used to contain hazardous materials.

Grades 3, 6, 7 and Grade 1 & 2 containers (Grade 1 & 2 bottles accepted but other containers are not). Grades are found in a triangle on or near bottom of container.

  • Yoghurt containers
  • Meat and food trays
  • Cling film
  • Disposable nappies
  • Polystyrene cups
  • Fuel/oil containers
  • Plastic bags
  • Toys
  • Buckets
  • Containers greater than 4 litres (too large for truck)

We do not have the technology to recycle these types of plastic in NZ at present. In some cases such as with Grade 1 & 2 plastic containers they are not suitable for recycling because there are no established markets now or in the foreseeable future for the materials contained in these items.

Recycling is about sustainability and that includes recycling for sustainable markets. If the markets for certain items or grades of plastic are not there, or are not sustainable, then we should not try to recycle these items because doing so would result in a waste of other resources.

Aluminium or tin

  • Aluminum foil/food containers
  • Paint tins
  • Fuel/oil containers
  • Machine/appliance parts
  • Garden tools
  • Pots and pans

Paper/cardboard

  • Beer/6-pack boxes
  • Tetrapak
  • Coated
  • Frozen food boxes

Stolen recyclables

If you are concerned about recyclable items being removed from your bin please let us know. We will contact the contractor, Streetsmart Ltd, to make them aware of the problem. Please provide us with as much information as possible including any details about the offender, vehicle registration or time of incident if known.

Surplus recycling material

If you cannot fit all recycling into your bin, place the overflow in an open rigid container e.g. a plastic container approximately the size of the recycling bin, and place this next to the recycling bin. This container will be left behind.

Please note that additional material will not be collected if:

  • it is placed out in plastic bags - for health, safety and operational reasons
  • it is placed in a cardboard box
  • it contains contamination, rubbish or materials not for the recycling collection
  • the additional box is much larger than a recycling bin

What to do if recyclables/paper is blowing away?

If you are having difficulty with paper blowing away, bundle the paper securely using string or plastic bags. DO NOT use a cardboard box to contain the paper. These can fly off the Paperchase truck and so are not collected.

For the recyclables, place the heavier material (e.g. glass, tin cans) on top of the crushed plastic and aluminium tins.

Help with putting recycling bins out

It is expected that the recycling bins will be put out in the same manner as rubbish bags. If you need assistance you may wish to approach a neighbour, family member or friend for assistance. Alternatively please contact either the Citizens Advice Bureau or Age Concern who can offer assistance.

Green stickers

If a green sticker is left on an item in your recycling bin by the recycling contractor, this is to identify the item as not being suitable for recycling because of:

  • Incorrect materials placed in the bin
  • Dirty recyclables
  • Recyclables tied up in a plastic bag
  • Broken glass
