With 1656 kilometres of roads, Rodney District Council has a huge commitment to roading. This commitment extends to improving conditions and safety, routine and emergency maintenance, roadside stormwater schemes and the planning of roads for future development.
The roading team deals with rural (slip repairs and bridge renewals) and urban (piping of open drains, kerb and channelling, urban upgrades) issues as well as a progressive sealing program throughout the District.
From managing large projects like Penlink to fixing a
pothole, the Roading crew helps link our vast community.

ALPURT B2 is the last stage of the realignment and extension of the Northern Motorway between Albany and Puhoi. It extends north from Grand Drive in Orewa to connect with the existing State Highway 1 route at Titford’s Bridge, Puhoi.
The 7.5 km motorway, which will be mostly four-lane, will give motorists a quick, efficient, integrated and safe route between Auckland and Northland. It will also enhance opportunities for economic growth in the Rodney District, Northland and the wider Auckland region.
The construction of the motorway will face several engineering challenges, including:
The motorway involves the construction of five culverts, twin tunnels at Johnstone's Hill, and six bridges along the 7.5 km stretch including three large bridges at Waiwera, Nukumea and Otanerua.
Earthworks will be the dominant activity during construction and the job is likely to take four full seasons of work. This will involve shifting over three million cubic metres of earth.
ALPURT B2 will be a toll road. The decision to use tolls to help cover the cost of the road has meant that Transit new Zealand has been able to begin building it well before it could have been built with traditional funding alone.
The decision to build ALPURT B2 as a toll road was based on community support for bringing forward the road through tolling, as reflected in the outcomes of consultation and a survey on the toll proposal.
SH1: Northern Motorway Extension Outlining the Northern Motorway Extension Route (ALPURT B2).

The Council entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Transit NZ in October 2003 for the purpose of establishing a protocol under which issues relating to Transit NZ projects in Rodney could be formally discussed. These issues include the earlier completion of the Northern Motorway Extension and the continued use of Grand Drive in Orewa North while the project is awaiting funds and/or under construction.
The toll road is on track to be completed by early 2009. Although parts of the road may appear finished, a lot of work remains to be done. This includes further work to complete the bridges and tunnels along the route, laying pavement along the length of the road and installing drainage systems, safety barriers, lighting and signage.
The Northern Motorway Extension is a Transit New Zealand project. The toll road is being constructed by a consortium known as the Northern Gateway Alliance, which includes Transit, Fulton Hogan, Leighton Contractors, URS New Zealand, Tonkin & Taylor and Boffa Miskell.
Comprehensive information including construction activity updates, newsletters and media releases are available on the Northern Gateway Alliance website.
