What is a walking school bus?
A walking school bus is similar in principle to a normal school bus but
the transport is undertaken by foot. Where available, the service is free
and is provided by parent volunteers with the support of the local school.
Some benefits:
- frees up parents time
- cheaper than other forms of transport
- guarantees safety of children enroute to school
- good form of exercise for children
- good way for children to interact with each other and other adults
How does it work?
A suitable walking route is established between the school grounds and
the homes of local school children with set times/spots where children are
collected. Volunteer parents play the parts of "bus driver" and
"conductor" who ensure the safety of the children enroute.
There is a parent/child ratio of 1adult to 8 children.
Where are they operating?
Currently there are walking school buses operating in the following
areas in Rodney:
- Riverhead
- Stanmore Bay (one operating and a second planned)
- Huapai (starting 29 March 2004)
Contact the local school in each area for details of the route,
collection spots and times.
How to organise a walking school bus
Sarah Burrows, School Travel Planner, is the facilitator for walking
school buses at the Rodney District Council. If you are interested
in organising a walking school bus you should approach your school
principal in the first instance to get the school's support and to
ascertain if there are other interested parents in the area. Once the
support of the school and other parents has been gained, you should
discuss your requirements with Sarah Burrows to facilitate. Sarah can be
contacted on 0800 426 5169 (426 5169 for HBC residents) or via email
sarah.burrows@rodney.govt.nz
